Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American performer and actress. Her work as Queen Latifah in film, television and in music has earned numerous prizes. These include the Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award In addition, she has six Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born in and raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita a schoolteacher who worked for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. as a police officer. Latifah's parents divorced when she aged 10 years old. Latifah attended Catholic School in Newark, New Jersey and was raised through her family's Baptist Church. Latifah is an Arabic word that means "delicate and gentle". Her aunt bestowed it on her in the age of eight. Latifah is a 5'10" tall forward on her high school team was always tall. At her school's game Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah first began to beatbox for Ladies Fresh. Latifah was among those who were part of the first model of the Flavor Unit which at that time consisted composed of MCs and producers led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, made a recording of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He emailed the recorded to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. The song got the attention to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and released her first track Wrath of My Madness.
